Guillemots settling in

Posted: February 5, 2024 in News

Guillemots are somewhat comical on dry land. They would normally only come to land to nest and spend much of their lives out at sea. To help protect their feet and legs, we have various parts of the aviary covered in fleeces/towels as well as foam/rubber mats.

Sadly guillemots are particularly vulnerable to pollutants in the water, especially oil. Indeed this pair were found beached due to oiled feathers.

Our two guillemots are making the most of the pond which is fantastic to see. Bathing and preening with help their natural waterproofing oils return after being stripped by spilled oil and the subsequent washing process. Although looking rather soggy now, they should be nice and waterproof in no time!
